The iconic Romeo y Julieta brand turns 150 years old this year, and Altadis U.S.A., owners of the U.S. trademark, has turned to some of the industry’s top tobacco growers for the celebratory smokes. Appropriately called the Romeo y Julieta 150th Anniversary, the cigar is made with a composition that the company calls a “Hall of Fame blend.”
“We sourced tobaccos from our close partners specifically for this project,” says Rafael Nodal, vice president of product capability for Altadis U.S.A. “The wrapper is an Ecuadoran Sumatra grown and fermented by A.J. Fernandez. The binder, a San Andrés, comes from our partners, the Turrent family. For the fillers, we used Peruvian and Honduran tobacco grown by our partners, the Plasencia family. And the Dominican filler tobacco was grown by our long-term partners José Mendez & Co.”
